Now, Cameron is venturing back to the big screen with his new movie Fireproof and he was happy to tell us all about it when we met up with him in Los Angeles last week. It turns out he’s been busy raising his six kids alongside his wife Chelsea and focusing his time on faith based television and DVD projects like the Left Behind series. It's better scripting.We all remember Kirk Cameron as Growing Pains’ loveable prankster Mike Seaver, but his step away from the spotlight probably left you wondering what happened to the former teen heart throb. Like their fellow Georgian, Tyler Perry, what they need isn't more Scripture. But let's hope that the filmmakers don't make too much over a decent take at the box office. Church-group bookings made the movie an opening weekend smash. He overacts, amping every argument up to Raging Bull, never able to pull back and give Caleb the subtle shadings he would have were he a real person and not an archetype.įireproof knows its audience and certainly caters to that audience, offering a "take it to the Lord in prayer" message that many will find comforting. It's rare that a child sitcom actor can make the jump to adult roles without some bad habits, and Cameron's are on display in every Left Behind or Fireproof he takes on. That subtext isn't quite "Rule your Roost, Promise Keepers Style" sexist, but it's close enough to bring up the comparison. The temptations of her workplace (the hospital, with handsome, rich doctors) would be beyond her reach if she were at home. None of these problems would be there if Catherine were still at home. The fire-fighting stuff is well-handled, too.īut the movie's subliminal message seems to be more sinister. The self-help suggestions made in Kendrick's film (his brother co-wrote the script) are solid and the fire station scenes have a corny-comic sensibility about them.
Dad (Harris Malcolm) offers his son a lifeline, a 40-day Bible-based self-counseling "cooling off" program that has him taking tiny steps like doing one nice thing a day for Catherine, holding his tongue when he feels the need to criticize, all stuff Dr. It's not until the marriage is on its last legs and Caleb's dad pitches in that he takes this advice.

One (Ken Bevel) tells him how to fix things. What can they do to make it "fireproof"?Ĭhief Holt is the sort of guy who tells his problems to his fellow firemen. She has her own schedule, her own money and her own priorities. His wife, Catherine (Erin Bethea), has gone back to work and isn't doing all the housework any more. He and his men can pull off a nail-biting train-tracks rescue (nicely shot and edited), and earn the thanks of those whose lives they've saved, but Chief Holt isn't getting the same respect at home. Think of these folks as Tyler Perry without the cross-dressing.Ĭameron plays Caleb Holt, the Albany fire chief, a can-do guy in a righteous profession. But they're growing, getting better, and the sermon is somewhat more subtle. It's still preachy, overwrought emotionally and dully scripted. The movie sports a tad more polish and Hollywood sophistication. The new film has a bigger-name cast, headed by former Growing Pains star and Christian film mainstay Kirk Cameron. Fireproof is the latest film from that cinematic congregation of Sherwood Baptist Church of Albany, Ga., the folks (preacher-director Alex Kendrick and Co.) who gave us the Christian football drama Facing the Giants.
